Abstract

    Since the fall of the dictatorial regime in April 2003, Iraq has witnessed a proliferation and spread of drug use and trade due to various factors, including individual, social, economic, and political reasons. Given the dangerous consequences of the drug phenomenon, which threatens the safety of individuals, communities, and society in general, and particularly affects the youth, the researchers sought to investigate the factors contributing to the prevalence of this issue. Social and economic factors such as poverty, unemployment, inequality, and environmental and social conditions are considered the primary reasons driving individuals to resort to drug use. Additionally, it is worth noting that an unstable environment and security breakdown facilitate drug smuggling and distribution. The proliferation of drugs in Iraq became noticeably pronounced after the terrorist group ISIS occupied large areas of Iraqi territory in 2014.

The researchers employed the social survey method with a sample in Al-Nasiriyah Prison for minor offences in Dhi Qar Governorate, southern Iraq, by selecting a sample of 50 drug users and designing a questionnaire for these inmates. This approach aimed to derive results related to the phenomenon under study and to reach the most significant conclusions regarding it.
