The present study aimed to evaluate secondary-stage chemistry textbooks in light of life application standards. The research population consisted of the most recent editions of secondary-stage chemistry textbooks approved by the General Directorate of Curricula in Iraq.
To achieve the objectives of the study, the researcher adopted the descriptive analytical approach. After reviewing the relevant literature and previous studies, the researcher developed the research instrument, represented by a list of life application standards. The validity of the instrument was established by presenting it to a panel of experts specialized in curricula and teaching methods, chemistry, measurement and evaluation, and educational psychology. Based on the experts’ feedback and suggested modifications, the instrument was refined into its final form, which included eight main standards and forty-six sub-indicators.
Subsequently, the content analysis was conducted using the developed instrument. The reliability of the analysis was verified through two procedures: first, by reanalyzing the content after a period of time by the researcher; and second, by employing external analysts with experience in teaching secondary-stage chemistry textbooks.
After tabulating and statistically analyzing the results, the study reached the following findings:
1-Secondary-stage chemistry textbooks achieved the life application standards at varying levels.
2-The sixth-grade (final year) chemistry textbook demonstrated the highest level of alignment with life application standards.
3-The fourth-grade scientific-stream chemistry textbook showed the lowest level of alignment with life application standards.
In light of these findings, the researcher proposed a set of recommendations and suggestions concerning secondary-stage chemistry textbooks.
