Abstract

Both classical and modern scholars have paid close attention to linguistic usage, seeing it as the central concern of any researcher working in the language sciences, as a way of understanding language as a system, in its vocabulary, meanings, and structures, its linguistic phenomena, its description in terms of rarity and frequency, and the stability of the linguistic rule built upon the actual performance of the language user.                                                                                                   

Anomalous (shath) usage is one of the patterns of linguistic performance that language scholars and researchers, grammarians in particular, have taken great interest in, regarding it as eloquent (fasih) linguistic performance. This research is therefore devoted to studying what Ibn ʿUsfur described as anomalous usage in the Holy Qur'an, to identify the justifications he relied upon in applying this description to Qur'anic usage, and the reasons behind it, in light of what has been established in the grammatical tradition.
