Abstract

This research explores the "rhetoric of visual and auditory imagery in describing architectural nature" in the diwan of the Abbasid poet Al-Walid bin Ubayd Al-Buhturi, moving beyond historical and superficial descriptive readings to a deep rhetorical analysis that investigates the secrets of his artistic craftsmanship. The study aims to uncover the rhetorical mechanisms (Bayan and Badi') employed by the poet to transform solid architectural structures, such as palaces and pools, into vibrant, expressive scenes. Relying on a descriptive-analytical approach, the study traces Al-Buhturi’s use of representative simile (Tashbih Tamthili) and implicit metaphor (Isti'arah Makniyyah) in semantic composition to depict the dynamism of the visual image and breathe life into inanimate objects. Furthermore, the research highlights the semantic dimensions of meaning-based embellishments (Muhassanat Ma'nawiyyah), such as antithesis (Tibaq) and poetic aetiology (Husn al-Ta'lil), in shaping spatial geometry and demonstrating the superiority of human craftsmanship over nature. Finally, the research reveals Al-Buhturi's ingenuity in forming the auditory image through verbal rhythm and onomatopoeia, utilizing paronomasia (Jinas) and repetition (Tasdir) to simulate the sounds of water, the movement of wind, and the echoes of palaces. The research concludes that the poet uniquely achieves the phenomenon of "synesthesia" and the harmony of word and meaning, turning his poetic text into a rhetorical architecture that parallels the physical architecture in its majesty and precision.
