Violence Expressions in American and Iraqi Sports Commentaries: A Critical Discourse Analysis

Abstract

    The study investigates violence expressions in sports commentaries that represents one of the prominent organization of oppression, violence, and challenge. It aims at constructing the systemic discourse to show the game system domination over the players through direct, structural, and cultural abuse expressions. It also reveals social inequalities as well ideologies of control, power, and suppression. Therefore, the present study critically analyzes ten sports comments from five American and five Iraqi commentators according to Galtung's model of violence (1969-1990) by using qualitative approach. This study ends with comparing and contrasting violence types from the perspective of both Americans and Iraqis to maintain some similarities and dissimilarities between them.
