Abstract

The research entitled “Assimilation between Ibn Jinni and Ibn Mujahid: A Comparative Phonetic Study” aims to clarify the role of linguists and great Qur’an readers in serving our great language, the language of the Qur’an, the language of the people of Paradise, since the early centuries. They had precedence in determining and establishing many scientific facts, especially in phonetics. In this research, we will explain the efforts of two scholars: Ibn Jinni (d. 392 AH), one of the linguists who enriched the Arabic library with books considered major references in all fields of language; and the other is Ibn Mujahid, one of the Qur’an readers (d. 324 AH), about whom the expression became famous that he was “the master of the craft and the first to make the seven into seven.”

The research contained an introduction, a preface, and two sections. The preface was devoted to defining assimilation linguistically and terminologically, explaining the cause of assimilation, and the efforts of linguists and Qur’an readers. The first section dealt with assimilation according to Ibn Jinni, while the second section dealt with assimilation according to Ibn Mujahid. Then came the conclusion, in which the most important findings reached were mentioned, followed by the list of references and sources.
