Abstract

Medical ethics are endorsed by all religions and sects, not only Islam, as they represent a purely humanitarian project. Islam, however, has sanctified and honored this profession due to its great significance, being closely linked to human life. Allah has bestowed upon humankind the highest form of honor, as mentioned in the Holy Qur’an.

Through my research, I have concluded the immense importance of medicine in Islamic thought, recognizing its value since the dawn of ancient civilizations such as the Sumerian, Babylonian, Assyrian, and Egyptian civilizations. Medicine remains essential to life because humans are always in need of physicians. It serves as the foundation upon which the principles and comprehensive rules for life’s necessities are built.

A physician is entrusted with his profession and the secrets of his patients. His knowledge is fundamental, encompassing both scientific and practical aspects of life. Medical associations have established regulations that make adherence to ethical guidelines mandatory for every doctor.

In my research, I have highlighted an exemplary Islamic thinker who regarded medicine as a sacred profession—Abu Bakr Al-Razi. He considered medicine to be one of the greatest professions, earning him the title of "The Physician". Razi set forth essential conditions for practicing medicine, with ethics being the most important aspect. No one can sustain a medical career without upholding ethical principles, making it a fundamental pillar of the profession.

Razi extensively discussed various aspects of medical ethics, including a physician’s conduct with patients, colleagues, and their professional responsibilities. His conclusions emphasize that a physician must never abandon ethical principles and must always uphold the integrity and honor of the medical profession.
