Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of antonyms in Al-Muhit Dictionary by Al-Fayruzabadi through a critical linguistic analysis of the classification of words he considered antonyms. This linguistic issue has been a subject of debate among linguists, as it refers to words that carry two opposite meanings simultaneously. The research aims to review the accuracy of Al-Fayruzabadi’s classifications and assess their adherence to established linguistic methodologies.

The study employs descriptive, analytical, and comparative methodologies by analyzing selected words classified as antonyms by Al-Fayruzabadi and comparing them with the views of classical and modern linguists. The analysis reveals that while some words genuinely belong to antonyms, such as al-jawn (meaning both white and black), others are inaccurately classified and belong to homonyms or polysemy rather than true antonyms.

The research concludes that the classification of antonyms in Al-Muhit Dictionary requires careful review, as some words categorized as antonyms were influenced by dialectal variations or semantic shifts over time. The study also highlights the impact of these classifications on linguistic, legal, and literary studies, shaping the interpretation of classical texts.
