Abstract

The study examines the narrative of funerals and the duality of reference in Abdullah Muhammad Alghamdi's novel "The Roof of the Village, the Bottom of the City." This novel delves into the documentary reality of a historical era in Saudi Arabian society, focusing on dualities like village versus city, life versus death, and spirit versus matter. These dualities highlight the contradictions arising from transformation and change, with the writer tracing these changes through the development of cities and villages. Additionally, the novel explores the dominance of the material over the spiritual and the philosophy of death. Alghamdi employs a narrative that emphasises the mental aspect and addresses the reader's intellect in interpreting the events of the novel.
